A Glimpse
The first time Charles saw Brideshead castle a curtain was drawn back and the dim room of his existence was flooded with glorious sunlight. For the first time he saw how mean and dull his circumstances were and also what else was possible. In Brideshead, he glimpsed for the first time life as it was meant to be.
All though the glorious, drunken summer at Brideshead Charles remained aware that one day it would be over. He would be woken up from his joyful dream of beauty by his father’s monotonous voice. He would once again dwell in shabby, grey rooms behind drawn curtains.
During those summer days things happened between Charles and Sebastian.
Charles let them happen.
Sometimes he made them happen.
Only when he was inebriated would Sebastian, trembling, reach for Charles but Charles was sober enough when he took off his clothes to dive into the fountain or to slip into Sebastian’s bath with him.
Charles told himself he did these things because he was young and carefree and there was beauty all around but he knew in his heart that for Sebastian it was more than play.
Charles understood that Sebastian longed for him the way he himself longed for Brideshead. Whether it was in kindness or cruelty that each of them gave the other a fleeting glimpse of his heart’s desire, Charles would never quite know.
