Stacia knows that she ought to tell Lucille she’s involved with someone else. That they’re involved with someone else. That Stacia has been carrying on simultaneous affairs with Lucille on earth and Grace in the realms of Immateria.

 

If she confessed, Lucille would understand. Understanding is in the air these days. Everyone is understood. It’s a brave a new world, an earthly paradise where all is acceptance and all is love.

 

Still, every apple must have its worm. Every Eden must have its viper.

 

Everyone has become what they were meant to be so why shouldn’t Stacia be what she has always been—the universal naysayer, the doubting Thomas, a jaded jill, a bitter pill.

 

Trouble in paradise.

 

So Stacia clings to her secret, to her deception. Truth has set everyone free but in her heart of hearts Miss Stacia Van der Veer nurses nostalgia for lies, for trickery and entanglement, for complications and discord in all its glorious manifestations.

Bad Magic


“Please, honey,” she begs. “ I’m really going to try this time but I need you. I need you with me if I’m going to beat this thing. You’re my strength, Tara. There’s no way I can do this without you.”

Her eyes are wide and teary, her voice trembles. I want to believe her but I’ve heard it too many times before. She knows just what to say to make me stay. I make it easy for her because I want to believe her. I want to stay with her forever but I know I have to go.

Because she not trying. She lying and she’ll lie to me as long as I let her. She’s consumed by her hunger for more and more. She loves the thrill of bad magic more than she loves me. Maybe that won’t always be true but right now, if I believed anything else I’d be the one telling lies.
