Rage Infection

Lying on the cold, hard wooden floor, his arms twisted and cramping from the ropes that bound him Jim could have used some of Selena’s valium that night.  His mind was as uneasy as his body.  His brain whirled with images of what was to come tomorrow—for him death, for the girls a life of slavery, systematic rape, and forced pregnancy.  It might preserve the human race, but maybe the human race didn’t deserve to go on.

Maybe it was for the best that he didn’t have the valium.  He could understand all too well how his parents felt in their last moments.  Helpless and beyond hope as he was Jim would have welcomed the chance to sleep and never wake.

For hours he lay awake, dimly aware of Farrell’s mutterings.  Then at last he drifted off into troubled dreams of bodies, blood and rage-infected monsters.

He was jolted awake in pitch darkness, as someone pulled him to his feet.

Was it Farrell?  Had he somehow gotten loose?  Or Selena?  She was clever, if anyone could have found a way to escape it was Selena.  He tried to speak, but a hand was clasped over his mouth stifling all sound.

Whoever it was compelled Jim forward, out of the room where he and Farrell were being held, down stairs and through hallways.  Dazed with sleep Jim stumbled along as he was half-dragged, half-led through the inky blackness.

They went downward, always downward until from the dampness Jim assumed they had reached the lowest point of the house, some deep basement.  There, they came to rest.  He was pushed to the floor and the hand fell away from his mouth.  The flicker of a match revealed to him Major Henry West, in full uniform despite the late hour.

The Major lit a candle illuminating the low ceiling and stone walls of the ancient basement room then knelt beside Jim, studying him intently.

“What do you want?”  Jim asked.

“You’ve been a great disappointment to me, Jim.”  The Major said somberly.  “I’d genuinely hoped you would be able to stay with us.”

“Why?  You don’t need more men.   I’m no use to you.”

“Your women trust you.”  The Major said.  “It might have been easier to deal with them with you on our side.”

“Like some kind of animal trainer?  Your girl whisperer?”  Jim hissed, his voice heavy loaded with disgust.

“How righteous you are,” the Major said smiling indulgently.  “Still living by rules that don’t apply any longer.  It was a nice time, when women could choose for themselves but that time is over now.  And really, it was the exception, not the rule.  A blink in human history.  I’m sure your ladies enjoyed it while it lasted but they’ll come to accept their new place soon enough.”

The Major reached out and laid his hand against Jim’s cheek.

“You’re so angry you’re trembling,” he said with amusement.  “You really are a noble soul, if wrong-headed.”    His hand moved along Jim’s face, stroking the sharp ridges of his bones, caressing his close-cropped hair.  “Really a lovely boy.  I would have liked to have kept you around, for my own reasons.”

Jim shivered violently, jerked away as the Major’s reasons became all too clear to him.  The thought of what the Major wanted made him sick, sick to his stomach with fear but wasn’t it a chance?  Maybe his only chance.

It was too much for him.  He started crying, his body and mind seeking some kind of relief from the unbearable pressure in uncontrolled weeping.  Sobs convulsed him like a seizure, he couldn’t breathe, couldn’t see.  Jim could only feel as the Major took him in his arms, held him tightly, stroking his twitching shoulders.

It went on until Jim had exhausted himself and finally lay limp in the Major’s arms, gasping for air.

“There lad, you’re all right,” Major West whispered soothingly, almost tenderly.  “I’m not interested in hurting you.  It gives me no pleasure.”  Still, his insistent caresses made it clear that he would have what he wanted.  Jim had no choice, no more than Selena and Hannah would have when their turn came.

Jim whimpered as the Major nuzzled against his neck but didn’t protest. He had rebelled before and now he was going to die.  If he complied now maybe he could live a little bit longer.

The Major’s hands explored his body, still weak, emaciated from the long coma.  Jim’s fragility, his helplessness seemed to arouse the man and his caresses became frantic, nearly painful but gradually Jim’s body began to respond.  He found himself thrusting against the Major, he felt something almost like eagerness when Henry West pulled down his jeans and underwear but terror engulfed him again when West pushed him face down against the damp stone floor.

It was easier than it could have been.  Determined to avoid infection in whatever guise, the Major wore a condom slicked with a clammy gel.  Still, it was sharp enough that Jim cried out when he was entered, and West clamped a hand over his mouth again.  Between the suffocating hand and the pounding, Jim panicked, breathing fast and shallow, he struggled.  One of the Major’s hands closed around Jim’s throat as the other stroked his hair.

“There now, don’t fight.  You’ll be all right,” the Major whispered even as he strangled Jim’s breath.  Absolute blackness pressed in on Jim, everything wavering in and out of focus.  He surrendered, surrendered to stabbing thrusts.  “There now, that’s a good lad,” the Major reassured him.  After that, Jim offered no resistance, just stared unblinkingly at the grey stones of the floor till the Major had finished.

When it was over West lay on top of Jim, a hand cradling the delicate blade of Jim’s shoulder as if he didn’t realize that Jim’s hands were literally tied and that coercion had been involved.  As if he believed they were actual lovers who had willingly made love.

“Don’t let them kill me,” Jim said.  His voice was a monotone, flat and dead.  He was too exhausted to cajole or even beg but he had to try to get what he could from the Major.  “Keep me.  I won’t be any more trouble.  I’ll do whatever you say.  Only keep me.”

West rolled off of Jim.

“Poor thing,” he said.  “Still hoping to wake up and find that everything’s gone back to how it was.”

“Please, keep me.”

“It’s too late for that, Jim.”  West said, not without regret.

“No…” Jim struggled to his knees.  It couldn’t have been for nothing, it couldn’t be too late.  “I can talk to Hannah and Selena.  I can bring them around…”

“You’ve already shown yourself to be uncooperative.”  The Major said, rising to his feet, fastening his trousers.  “My boys wouldn’t understand why I’m keeping you around.”

He reached down, petted Jim’s hair as if he were a pet dog.  Jim wanted to snap at the hand like a dog, like one of the infected monsters but instead he rubbed his face against the Major’s thigh.

“Aren’t I your boy now?”  He asked desperately.  “Aren’t I one of your boys?”

The Major’s boot caught Jim in the gut, sent him flying across the dank basement.  As he lay there retching Major West stood over him, his face livid with rage.

“I would never, never lay a hand on one of my boys.”  West said.  “And any one of them would die before they’d ever allow what you just submitted to…”

Jim didn’t let him finish.  All logic told him not to further provoke the man but he was beyond his own logic.

“I only did it so you’d let me go,” Jim hissed through clenched teeth.  “So I’d have time, so I could get Hannah and Selena out of here.  I would have fought you…”

West snickered, then laughed aloud.  His anger seemed to leave him, the amused indulgence he had shown before returned.

“You would have fought me?”  He said.  “I hardly think so.  You don’t have it in you, lad.”

In the end West hauled Jim back upstairs, unceremoniously depositing him back in the locked room where Farrell still slept.  And so Jim found himself back where he’d begun, waiting in the dark for dawn’s execution.  Back where he’d begun, but something was different this time.

The helplessness was still there, and the hopelessness but now there was something else – a feral rage that seemed to consume him, to push away everything he had been with a longing for blood.  Was this how those creatures out there felt, when the infection entered them?  Was he one of them now?  A savage, mindless thing driven only by a will to destroy?

He hoped so.   Hoped that he was as dangerous as one of them, hoped he could do as much damage.

“You don’t have it in you,” the Major had said.

Perhaps that had been true at twilight but as the first light of dawn broke, Jim had nothing else in him.

I'm watching 28 days later right now and it makes this next part (are you watching it right now?) with angry Jim back at the compound so much better. Thanks a bill.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting. Watching the movie I was really struck by just how feral Jim became when he returned to the compound so I thought I'd try and give him a little more motivation (not that he didn't already have plenty).
