Neither and Both

Mashiro dreams of them, Sou and Kureha.

Not just during the special class in the basement infirmary.  Not just on Thursdays after school but almost every night, alone in his bed in the darkness of the boys’ dormitory. 

In his dreams he is between them, Sou and Kureha.  He divides them yet brings them closer to each other than they ever would have come on their own.  Their hands caress and devour him. They sensually embrace him even as they threaten to pull him apart. 

Sou and Kureha both have secrets.  They hide behind the idea of what is male and what is female. 

Behind the mask of cuteness and femininity Kureha conceals a torrent of fear and anger. 

No one sees how scary she is or how scared.  They only see a sweet and smiling girl. 

Sou wears masculinity like armor.  What is underneath the hard, dark steel he covers himself with?  What is he hiding, a monstrous cruelty or something softer, the forbidden longing for another boy?

They hide behind male and female but Mashiro can not.  He is neither, and both.  Because he is a boy who is a girl he is a boy Kureha does not have to be afraid of, a boy Sou can allow himself to desire or perhaps to crush.  Because Mashiro is neither and both they need him and they need to tear him apart.
