Cobwebs
When the world was new her brother’s kisses had made her glow from the inside like strong, sweet wine. Now there was only an aching chill and the sharp metallic aftertaste of dried blood. The warmth and light that had been between them was gone.
For millennia she had yearned for him, awaiting his return. Each time she looked in the mirror she had seen his face and wished his return. Yet now that he was with her she found she was alone. He had killed their father; he hoped to destroy humankind.
She thought of Abraham, who had been humiliated and ostracized but could still be moved by a Tennyson poem. She thought of Abraham and tears filled her eyes.
“All these years we were apart you were the only one for me,” Prince Nuada said accusingly. “Now that I’ve returned why have you let another into your heart?”
“Your actions have shown me that my heart has been empty for years,” she answered. “You ceased to care for me long ago. Your only passion is the Golden Army. What you have felt for all these years was only the echo of my love for you.”
“Is it gone then?” He asked, his eyes pleading. Her heart broke open for him but inside was only cobwebs and the crumbled dust of their father’s corpse.
“It is not gone but dead,” she said. She intended no cruelty for it hurt her more than it could possibly hurt him. “You have killed it.”
